When spring approaches, it's the perfect time to get yourself ready for a cycling summer. Our Cycle into Spring programme has been developed to support you in doing just that. Cycle into Spring is open to non-members of Selby Cycling Club, if you can ride a bike, then these sessions are for you!
Bike Maintenance: Has your bike spent winter in the garage? Learn about the checks you should do before you ride your bike, how to mend a puncture/change a tyre, clean and look after your bike.
Bike Confidence: Build your skills in cycling safely on quiet roads around Selby.
Guided Bike Rides: Learn how to cycle in a group, the different hand signals and voice calls you will hear. Guided Bike Rides will differ in length as you progress through the sessions.
When and Where?
Sunday mornings starting 22nd March 2026. Sessions will differ in length and venue, dependant on the activity planned. Please note it is compulsory to wear a cycle helmet on all rides.
How much does it cost?
Cycle into Spring is completely free, but is a bespoke programme to help increase your confidence and progress your cycling, so we are looking for attendees to commit to as many of the sessions as possible. We do stop at a coffee shop while out on our rides, so you may want to bring some money for a drink.

Testimonial from Lee who attended Cycle to Spring in 2025:
I started cycling on my own, riding short routes around local parks and quiet roads. I enjoyed it, but I wanted to challenge myself with more adventurous rides and meet others who shared my passion. I hesitated to join a cycling club, worrying I wouldn’t be able to keep up—until I discovered the free Cycle into Spring course run by Selby Cycling Club.
From the very first session, I felt welcomed by the club’s qualified British Cycling coaches and friendly ride leaders. The course taught essential skills like bike and helmet safety, pre-ride checks, and puncture repairs, followed by short, enjoyable rides on quiet roads and cycle paths. Each week, the rides grew slightly longer, and we learned how to ride safely in a group using hand signals and voice calls. The pace was always supportive, with the group staying together so no one felt left behind.
By the end of the course, I felt confident, inspired, and excited to join the club. My fear of not keeping up was completely unfounded. Since then, I’ve participated in a wide range of cycling activities with Selby Cycling Club, from Sportives and Time Trials to off-road Gravel and long-distance Audax rides—all with the encouragement and support of the group.
If you want to build your cycling confidence in a welcoming and supportive environment, I can’t recommend this course enough."
Testimonial from Fiona who attended Cycle to Spring in 2024:
Cycling into Spring was developed to encourage cyclists to take part in a free, bespoke, inclusive programme to increase confidence, skills and progress in cycling. The first session started with meeting in a local sports hall. Here, the organisers (who are qualified British Cycling Coaches) and Selby Cycling club ride leaders, greeted us with a warm welcome and explained about the programme. This gave opportunity to ask questions and to meet other participants. Useful tips and advice about bike maintenance, along with a ‘hands on’ session followed.
The next session involved learning how to ride in a group safely, use different hand signals and voice calls. This was held on an airfield just outside Selby town. We cycled on a dedicated tarmacked cycling path. Being a newbie to riding in a group, this venue was absolutely perfect for this skills session. The faciliator’s were amazingly supportive, great educators and there was a tight control on safety. They went that ‘extra mile’, checking in with all participants and ensuring everyone was comfortable with the session.
Following on from this upskilling activity , were scheduled rides. The distances increased weekly (all doable) therefore making it a gradual build up in intensity, and also preparing those who wanted to join the SCC Sunday social White ride. All rides were very well planned and organised. Regular updates/changes to rides were sent out via emails and riders were invited to say if they were attending.
Having learned new skills and put these into practise on quiet country roads, boosted my confidence to make the transition to using clipless pedals. Wow- what fun! These pedals have taken my love of cycling to another level!
At the end of the programme, Cycling into Spring rides merged with SCC Sunday social White rides, giving a taster of what it was like to be part of a club ride, Nobody was left behind and of course these rides involved a cafe stop! The ride leaders were there to offer guidance, technical tips and encouragement to better the individuals cycling experience.
I have so enjoyed Cycling into Spring with SCC. It has been the perfect stepping stone to get me back in the saddle and ready for cycling into summer. A big ‘thank you’ to the organisers and ride leaders.
